Ice Machine Not Dropping Ice: What Causes It?

Ice not dropping from your machine? Learn what’s causing it and how to fix it.

Ice Formation Without Release Indicates a Fault

An ice machine that produces ice but does not release it is a common issue in commercial kitchens and bars. While the machine may appear to be operating, production is effectively halted. The most common cause is a problem with the harvest cycle. This is the stage where ice is released from the evaporator plate. If the system cannot complete this cycle, ice remains stuck.

Scale build-up is a major contributor. Mineral deposits create adhesion between the ice and the plate, preventing release. Temperature and refrigeration issues can also affect the harvest process. If the system cannot achieve the correct temperature change, ice will not drop as expected.

Water distribution problems may also create uneven ice formation, making release more difficult. Mechanical faults, including worn components or faulty sensors, can disrupt the cycle.

Ignoring this issue often leads to complete system shutdown as ice accumulates. Regular cleaning and maintenance significantly reduce the likelihood of this problem.
